    Registered

    Nurse (RN) - Neuroscience Stepdown Unit

    What you will do in this role:

    The

    Neuroscience RN staff nurse provides direct critical neuroscience nursing care

    in accordance with established policies and procedures of Rio Grande Regional

    Medical Center. In collaboration with the patient, the patient's family and

    other members of the health care team, the clinical RN assesses, plans,

    implements, evaluates, delegates and coordinates treatment plans and the plan

    of care.

    Core competencies will be assessed primarily on

    the following patient population(s) served: Acute medical/surgical care of

    diseases and conditions including but not limited to: cardiovascular (cardiac

    medical only) pulmonary, neuro, GI, GU, skeletal/muscular, renal, ortho

    conditions and diseases including but not limited to: AMI, CAD, PVD, CVA/TIA,

    COPD, CHF, shock, renal failure, metabolic disorders, etc.

    The Neuroscience RN will Perform

    direct patient care within the scope of the Registered Nurse Practice Act with

    emphasis on the neuroscience service line



    • Demonstrates

      knowledge and application of the nursing process for Neuroscience patients

      of appropriate ages in each assigned areas; i.e. craniotomies, pituitary

      surgical patients, ischemic stroke classification, seizure disorders, VP

      shunts, cervical and lumber surgeries, and cardiovascular arrhythmias

      and/or disease/disorders.
    • Assesses and

      monitors and recognizes changes in the patient's behavioral, neurological

      and physiological status; takes appropriate action based on assessment.
    • Utilizes

      professional skills and judgment in delivering and/or delegating care for

      patients.
    • Assists with unit

      employee process activities, including orientation, professional

      development.
    • Provides for the

      processing of patients transitions thru department, and movement of patients

      to other levels of care; i.e. rehab.
    • Assists in the

      Performance Improvement activities of the department, such as pain,

      adaptation, mobility, and outcomes.
    • Educates the

      patient/family based on individual needs. Will need 10 hours of stroke

      education per year.
    • Provides and

      ensures patient safety at all times.
    • Specializes in the

      care of patients with biopsychosocial alteration due to nervous system

      dysfunction.
    • Other duties as

      assigned within scope and practice of licensure.
    • Use therapeutic communication in daily

      practice
    • Maintain a safe and therapeutic

      neurological environment
    • Implement and direct care, using the

      nursing process with emphasis on the needs of individual nervous system

      disorder patients
    • Provide expert neurological nursing

      care according to Program policies, protocols, guidelines and order sets
    • Participate in daily patient rounds

      to ensure optimal inpatient care through adherence to Program policies,

      and facilitate post hospital care coordination
    • Evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing

      process
    • Provide emotional support of the patient

      and significant others to make informed choices regarding health care
    • Delegate tasks to the appropriate

      caregiver
    • Participate in neuroscience department

      specific initiatives and process improvement
    • Promote a supportive Neurological

      environment
    • Provide supervision of new employees,

      patient care assistant, vocational nurses, nurse technicians, student

      nurses and/or nurse externs
    • Maintain high quality (age specific) care

      for adolescent, adult and geriatric patients as assigned
    • Support the mission, vision and values of

      the organization

      Qualifications

      Qualifications:

      -- Graduate

      of an accredited school of professional nursing

      -- Current

      license by the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas

      -- Preferred

      experience as RN in Critical Care, Med-Surg, Telemetry, and Neurology

      -- Current

      Licensure by the State of Texas

      -- Current

      CPR certification,

      -- ACLS

      required or within a minimum of 6 months of employment.
